Nature's Colourful Palette for Textiles

This course runs for 4 weeks on Thursdays on 16th April, 23rd April, 30th April, and 7th May 2026, 9.30am - 12pm.

Have you always wanted to build your own colour chart with natural dyes? Explore the colourful palette of natural dyes on textiles in this 4-week course. This workshop will be held in Parkwood and are suitable for participants of 18 years and older.

Guided by a local textile artist, Annette Wiguna, you will learn the fundamental steps in:

  • Selecting suitable textiles and scouring protein and cellulose fabrics/yarns

  • Mordanting with tannin and alum sulphate for cellulose

  • Mordanting with alum and cream of tartar for protein

  • Identifying different types of natural dyes and extraction

  • Modifying pH level to extend colour range

  • Make your own organic indigo vat and how to maintain it

  • Create your own rainbow colour wheel with dyed swatches.

The skills you learn in this course will give you the confidence in adjusting the natural dye amount and pH modifier to achieve the intended colour. This workshop is suitable for beginners and those with some natural dye experience. All materials are provided.

What to bring:

  • Closed-in non slip footwear

  • Old tshirt/apron

  • Waterproof and heatproof gloves + a mask

  • A notebook to keep record of your progress and swatches. Workshop hand out will be provided.

  • 2 old towels

  • Optional: 1-2L glass container to take some dyes home

  • Your own water bottle

Location:

This workshop will be held at my private studio in Parkwood. Access will be announced via email. Please note, the venue is not suitable for young children.

If you are not able to attend a session, please let me know in advance as I am happy to allocate your booking to another session. If you are also welcome to transfer your booking to someone else, please let me know ahead of time if you wish to do so.
