FIVE TIDES

Five Tides brings together five accomplished women artists with heritages from Japan, Palestine-Germany, Indonesia, and Australia who have all made Western Australia their creative home. This inaugural exhibition marks the emergence of our collective Diane Keating, Junko Kitamura, Nadia Rasheed, Carolyn White, Annette Wiguna and welcome guest artist Kate O'Shea from Ireland.

Our convergence in Walyalup (Fremantle) reflects this port city's history as a meeting place of cultures. We are united by profound shared experiences: all five of us have navigated the complex journey of finding home in a new place. Whether through migration, displacement, or chosen relocation, we understand how geography shapes identity and how artistic practice becomes a bridge between worlds.

Our collective strength lies in our diversity of approaches to common themes. We share a deep commitment to process-based practice, where the journey of making is as meaningful as the final work. We celebrate the tactile and handmade, working across traditional boundaries where printmaking connects with textiles, ceramics relates to sculpture, and painting engages with photography.

What distinguishes us are our unique artistic perspectives and approaches. We work with different materials, techniques, and conceptual frameworks, creating collective richness through our varied methodologies. Our individual practices offer multiple perspectives on universal experiences of belonging, memory, transformation, and hope. Our work spans decades of practice and encompasses emerging voices, creating intergenerational dialogue within our group.

As we prepare for larger exhibitions in 2026, this pop-up introduction offers our Fremantle community a glimpse into our individual practice. Five Tides represents multicultural creativity taking root in Fremantle's artistic landscape where different perspectives meet and new forms emerge when diverse artistic practices come together.

What is Social Dyeing Session (SDS)?

SDS is planned to be held once every 2 months (bimonthly) to reconnect with fellow dyers/textile enthusiasts who wish to explore dyeing and printing in a self-directed group setting. Please read the following important information about SDS and if you are eligible to participate:

  • SDS is not a tutored workshop but rather an informal session

  • SDS is only open to those who have done my textile workshops before AND anyone who are already familiar with the scouring and mordanting processes.

  • You will need to bring your scoured and mordanted fabrics/yarns, and optionally your own pot/stove if you’d like to have full control of your dye bath.

  • Mordanted fabric samples can be purchased directly from me for $25 (approx. 100g bundle, usually $30 elsewhere).

  • I will provide my own Eucalyptus/tannin dye bath, steamers, stove, and a couple of dyes that everyone can try.

  • SDS is normally held at the Fremantle Fibonacci Centre (19 Blinco St, Fremantle).

  • Please wear closed-in footwear, apron, and byo mask, gloves, tools you require for your project.

Free parking is available along Blinco Street.

Beverages and meals can be ordered at Hinata Cafe onsite.
