Intro to Natural Dyeing & Printing (May) - Vic Park

Learn the essential steps to begin your natural dyeing and printing (ecoprinting) journey with textile artist Annette Wiguna, using eco-friendly and affordable ingredients sourced from your pantry and garden. This one-day workshop is specially designed for beginners and those with prior experience in natural dyeing and/or ecoprinting.

In this one full day workshop, you will learn how to:

  • Choose suitable natural fabrics and scour them appropriately

  • Identify different types of plants and use them for dyeing and printing

  • Make up a eucalyptus dye bath from scratch and a dye bath using a natural dye extract

  • Use vinegar soak for protein fabrics

  • Mordanting with iron water for cellulose fabrics

  • Make your own soy milk binder for cellulose fabrics

  • Effectively bundle your fabrics for clear prints

  • Apply basic shibori folding techniques for resist dyeing

  • Extend the colour range by using pH modifier

  • Determine the role of a steamer and dye bath

With regular practice, the above skills will prepare you for Advanced Botanical Printing where you can learn more about printing with blankets, dye infusion, and more exploratory techniques.

The completion of this course will also enable you to participate in the bimonthly Social Dye Session.

What to wear/bring:

  • Closed in non-slip footwear

  • Old tshirt/apron

  • Gloves and mask (if sensitive to vapour)

  • 2 old towels

  • Your own water bottle

All materials and handouts are included in this workshop.

If you are not able to attend a session, please let me know in advance as I am happy to allocate your booking to another session.
